One Giant Leap Australia has been established to prepare and sustain the next generation to thrive in an increasingly technologically complex and competitive global economy. Founded in 2015 by Jackie and Bob Carpenter, One Giant Leap Australia creates unique learning experiences to develop and enhance, scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical (STEM) literacy, as well as the crucial skills of problem solving, critical analysis, creative thinking, communication and collaborative teamwork. A key activity of One Giant Leap since it was established and prior to that, by Jackie in a personal capacity, has been taking delegations of Australian students, teachers and parents to Space Camp USA, based in Huntsville, Alabama.
Since Jackie’s first visit to Space Camp USA in 2007 as a scholarship winner with Honeywell Educators at Space Academy program, she has taken hundreds of students, teachers and parents to the US for the program. In 2018, the One Giant Leap delegation comprised 123 participants – 80 students, 16 teachers and 27 parents and community leaders. In addition to its Space Camp activities, One Giant Leap Australia is also the exclusive Affiliate Director for Australia and other Southern Hemisphere countries for the international Destination Imagination program – a US based non-profit initiative that each year brings together more than 150,000 students supported by over 38,000 volunteers to participate in project-based challenges that are designed to build confidence and develop extraordinary creativity, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
One Giant Leap Australia is supported by some of the major players in the space and aerospace Industries, including, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the Royal Australian Air Force and the United States Space and Rocket Centre.
One Giant Leap Australia has forged strong working relationships and partnerships with a broad range of education providers, government agencies, space industry companies, national and international aerospace and astronomical researchers, and other community-based organisations. During her “Space Camp” journey Jackie has also developed an impressive community of friends from the broader international space sector, including: astronauts, flight directors, scientists, CEO’s, senior executives and subject matter experts from around the world.
