KIBO Asian Try Zero G

Dec 15, 2025

Excitement is building for the Asian Try Zero-G competition. Two young Australians have had their space experiment accepted by One Giant Leap Australia in partnership with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Australian Space Agency for the Asian Try Zero G program.

Students Hayley Yousef and Kaila Elias designed an experiment called “Water Spring”, which uses a slinky to investigate how water moves under contraction and expansion forces in microgravity. Their experiment was selected from over 1,100 international applicants! Their experiment is timetables to be performed onboard the International Space Station on 22nd January, 2026.

The ATZG competition invites students and young scientists from participating countries to propose simple physics experiments that astronauts can perform aboard the ISS’s Japanese “Kibo” module. Entries are judged by a panel of space professionals, and approved experiments must use items already certified for spaceflight, run in under ten minutes, and avoid complex or hazardous materials and procedures. Those chosen receive expert guidance and the results that include a video of the experiment being carried out in space. Incredibly, their experiment is also live streamed back to Earth for public and educational outreach.
