2021 YES! Youth Encouragement Scholarships awarded to one of the Gadget Girlz
Gadget Girl, Nicola Baker, has been awarded the inaugural Yes! Youth Encouragement Scholarship by the Rotary Club of Sydney.
Tom Nolan INSPIRE Scholarship
Tom Nolan passed away December 31st, 2020 leaving behind a wife, grown children, grandchildren and thousands of people who loved and followed his passion of STEM education. An oceanographer by trade, Tom saw the best in everyone he met. Through twists and turns in his life, Tom worked in oceanography, space exploration and a host of education related trades.
Tom swapped ocean going ships for spaceships more than 20 years ago. Amongst other things in his life, he was recognised for his STEM outreach work by being awarded the 2019 NASA JPL Bruce Murray Award.
We are proud of our partnership with the EOS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FUTURE EXCELLENCE IN STEM program.

OGLA Newsletter – January 2021
Welcome to our first newsletter of 2021. I would like to begin this issue with a Tribute to Tom Nolan. Tom was diagnosed with a most aggressive form of brain cancer one month after he retired from NASA JPL last January. The news was devastating. One Giant Leap Australia and Tom had worked together on some incredible plans and we were looking forward to building capacity of the ‘Space, STEM and Your Future’ program. Tom passed away 6 pm on 31st December 2020 from pneumonia. You can read his tribute and if you wish to contribute to the Australian Tom Nolan INSPIRE Scholarship fund you are very welcome to. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.
KIBO RPC Finals!
Students from Galen Catholic College, Wangaratta, have reached new heights in coding. The team of Galen VEX students coded their way into history, by being one of 3 teams that successfully completed the space mission for JAXA’s inaugural Kibo Robotic Programming Challenge: KiboRPC.
Taking You Higher – A Women in Space Teleconference
Sally Tindall, Shannon McConnell and Alice Gorman. A future astronaut, a Deep Space expert and a space archaeologist will inspire us and then answer questions about careers in space. An ‘out of this world’ event moderated by Coco Dobbie, a One Giant Leap Australia Foundation Ambassador. This teleconference will be on Thursday 24th September from 6 to 7 pm (AEST).
